It is a primary way through which students pursuing undergraduate, graduate or vocational/career programs can access federal student aid, alongside potentially qualifying them for state and institutional aid. The deadline for the FAFSA 2025-2026 school year is June 30, 2026.

FAFSA Income Thresholds 2025–26
The FAFSA 2025-2026 doesn’t have a laid out and fixed income threshold that applies to everyone. The eligibility for various aids depends on a plethora of factors. Listed below are some key points regarding FAFSA and why it is still worth filling out regardless of income.
Need-Based Aid – Your assets and income play a role in determining your Student Aid Index (SAI). The Pell Grant eligibility has specific income thresholds based on the percentage of the federal poverty level, the size of your family etc. Dependent students’ eligibility are based on the parents’ 2023 Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). A lower SAI would mean that you may be eligible for more need-based aid.
Non-Need-Based Aids – You can also fill up the FAFSA 2025-2026 form for Federal Student Loans (unsubsidised and PLUS loans) as well that are available regardless of your family’s income and assets.
Institutional Aid – Many Colleges require you to fill the FAFSA for their internal scholarships and grants. They are usually merit-based and may or may not be based on your family’s income and assets.
FAFSA Tips for International Students
International students are not eligible for FAFSA 2025-2026 directly. It is primarily for US citizens and eligible non-citizens like green card holders, refugees and asylum seekers. Some universities may however, still require them to complete the FAFSA or a similar form called the CSS Profile. Some universities will have their own institutional financial aid application to assess the eligibility of a student for an institutional aid. Financial aid for students in the US is a highly competitive landscape. Start early and find out if each college has its own specific aid policies for international students. Look for scholarships/loans in your home-country, or from global organisations. Financial aids are need-blind as well as need-aware. So apply anyway!
FAFSA vs CSS Profile 2025–26
While FAFSA is the primary and free application for federal financial aid, the College Scholarship Service Profile (CSS Profile) is administered by the College Board, requires a submission fee and is used by colleges to grant institutional aid to deserving students. The CSS Profile is required by around 280 selective US colleges and universities where students are assessed based on their comprehensive financial need for scholarships or grants. Some key differences are listed below –
- The CSS Profile typically asks for more in-depth information on a student’s financial situation as compared to FAFSA.
- Both domestic and international students can apply for financial aid using the CSS profile.
- Unlike the FAFSA, submitting a CSS Profile to a college involves a fee ($25 for the first college, $16 for each additional college thereafter).
