IB Passion Projects

At the heart of the IB philosophy is the belief that students should be active participants in their education. Each of the four IB programmes empowers students to take charge of their own learning and equips them with the skills they need to thrive in our ever-changing world. An IB education encourages students to be curious, think critically and challenge the status quo.”  (Artificial intelligence (AI) in learning, teaching, and assessment. International Baccalaureate, 2023) According to the aforementioned article (read more here.), innovation is the pumping heart of the International Baccalaureate system, it clearly encourages students to be game changers in an ever evolving tech savvy world! That’s where IB Passion Projects comes in. The role of passion project in IB is to ignite the passion and curiosity in students to go beyond the papers of textbooks, to discover their passions and interests, and know how these could be integrated with science, technology and entrepreneurship! In the following lines, we will dive into an exploration of what Interational Baccalaureate projects are and how they develop student’s characters beyond grades and numbers!

Defining IB Passion Projects: What is a Passion Project?

Passion Projects are one of the main pillars of the IBDP, also know as the CAS (Creativity Action Service), which encourages students’ interpersonal and personal development by letting them learn by experience and giving them chances to collaborate and make decisions for themselves. Projects could vary from but not limited to environmental (saving oceans from plastic), media (launching a podcast to raise awareness on a specific problem), service (teaching underprivileged students and levelling up their educational lives) These are only mere examples encompassing three major domains in the IB passion projects and those are Creativity, Action, and Service. Students get the chance to use their imaginations and participate in creative activities as part of the IB CAS program’s creativity component. It’s one of the three requirements students need to meet in order to finish the CAS program. See figure 1.

To further elaborate on the creativity side, students must participate in 50 hours or more of creative activities, which can include:

  • Music
  • Painting
  • Theater
  • Creative Writing

By the same token, students must complete at least 50 hours of physical exercise as part of the activity component. This can be done in a variety of ways including:

  • Sports
  • Hiking
  • Dancing
  • Martial Arts

Surely, they need to select an activity that they find interesting, fun, and challenging! It’s an open invitation to try new things that they have never done before and can take part in team or individual sports. Last but not least, can take many different forms, such as:

  • Volunteering at a nearby hospital
  • Helping in a community garden
  • Working at a food bank.

The Importance of IB Passion Projects

Improving Academic Skills

In a study of the MYP’s impact on student performance and teacher pedagogy in the United States, instructors stated that the MYP benefited pupils by fostering higher order thinking and educating the complete child. Teachers also claimed that the MYP improved teacher pedagogy by increasing collaboration and teaching outside of examined subject (Kobylinski-Fehrman 2013). To further elaborate on the study, the United States research compared student involvement and performance in five MYP schools to five non-MYP schools in a large, socioeconomically diverse school district. Using state examinations as a baseline, the results showed that a higher proportion of MYP students performed proficiently or advancedly on mathematics and science assessments than the matched comparison group (Wade 2011).

Fostering Personal Development

In a study made by Myeong-hee Shin in 2018, 79 students were divided into 13 groups with a common purpose. Each team was given a project, and each student on the team was allocated a task that would assist the team in meeting the predetermined goal. This study’s project was a film production that needed students to collaborate. The findings of this study support the notion that project-based learning boosts students’ motivation while also improving their cooperative abilities. This is because the problem-solving process in project-based learning is built on cooperative learning, students must take more responsibility for the development of their social skills as well as their academic talents (Myeong-hee Shin, 2018)

According to the study’s findings, students learned more vocabulary and language usage through project-based learning (more than 50% of students answered strongly agreed and agreed) and experienced an increase in learning motivations while also adopting more positive attitudes toward language learning. Over 70% of the 108 Myeong-hee Shin students (6.5% strongly agreed and 64.1% agreed) had significant confidence in English learning through project-based learning and anticipated that project-based learning might be introduced into future classes. In conclusion, students’ involvement in project-based learning using technology has pushed them to learn. Those results were only from a single study on the importance of project based learning, how merier the results and the benefits would be of the IB passion projects!

Influencing Creative Thinking in Students

1. Promoting Diverse Thinking:

Open-ended exploration: Unlike standardized assessments with pre-determined answers, passion projects allow students to explore their interests freely. This flexibility allows people to come up with novel ideas, consider different points of view, and experiment with unexpected solutions.

Students are encouraged to examine current information, dive further into challenging subjects, and question established conventions. This technique encourages critical thinking and assists in the development of distinctive and inventive solutions.

2. Encouragement of Experimentation and Risk-Taking:

Stepping into the unkown: Passion projects frequently push students into uncharted terrain, requiring them to explore with new approaches, strategies, and resources. This desire to try new things and take chances stimulates their creativity and leads to surprising discoveries. Accepting failure as a natural component of the creative process: Students learn that failure is a natural aspect of the creative process.

Preparing for Higher Education and Career

In a recent article on LinkedIn showing the most valuable soft skills you need to develop to get hired, those were:

  • Time management
  • Communication
  • Organization
  • Problem-solving
  • Critical thinking
  • Interpersonal skills

If any of those skills were to be developed in students, then IB passion projects are the answer simply because:

  • Collaboration and communication are encouraged: Students frequently collaborate on passion projects, sharing their ideas, brainstorming solutions, and building on one other’s work. This collaborative setting encourages creative thinking by exposing kids to other points of view and creating a sense of community around their common interests.
  • Celebrating accomplishments and overcoming obstacles: Completing a passion project gives kids a sense of satisfaction and pride in their work. This boosts their self-esteem and creates a conviction in their creative ability.
  • Developing resilience, adaptability, and a desire to learn from mistakes: Navigating the uncertainties and obstacles that come during a project helps students develop resilience, adaptability, and a readiness to learn from mistakes. This growth mentality is required for ongoing creative development.
  • Ownership of their learning: Passion projects encourage students to take charge of their learning path. They conduct autonomous inquiry, exploration, and development of their grasp of a topic, establishing a sense of responsibility and ownership over their intellectual development.

Showcasing Success: Stories of Remarkable IB Projects

Patrick William Liong has always felt a moral commitment to give back to society and make a lasting difference through social work. But he couldn’t decide on just one way to help. This resulted in the formation of Operation Drip. A non-profit organization with multiple projects. Read more here.

To begin, he was considering education, sustainability, and a pay-it-forward scheme. The mission of Operation Drip is to bring the community together by giving them a way to help, and the results were fascinating:

The Lasting Impact of IB Passion Projects on Students

Passion projects stand out as transforming experiences within the IB program, allowing students to explore their interests, develop essential abilities, and establish lifelong learning habits. These projects develop creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving ability by offering a platform for self-directed learning and discovery.

As the world continues to evolve, the requirement for adaptive, imaginative individuals grows. Project-based learning, as demonstrated by passion projects in the IB program, provides a powerful answer by providing students with the tools and mentality they need to flourish in a quickly changing environment.
