IGCSE English Exams and Past Papers: Overview

The assessment of IGCSE English Literature (0475) is divided into three main objectives: knowledge with understanding, handling information and problem-solving, and experimental skills and investigations. Each paper is weighted differently based on these objectives:

Paper 1

All students

50% of final grade

Time Alloted:
1 hour 30 minutes (90 mins)

Format:
50 marks – this is a compulsory written paper. Students answer two questions: one from Section A and one from Section B. All questions carry equal marks

Content:
Relevant passages/poems are printed on the question paper. Set texts for this complement can be found listed in Section 3 of the syllabus

Paper 2

50% of final grade

Time Alloted:
1 hour 30 minutes (90 mins)

Format:
50 marks – students must answer two questions on two texts; one passage-based question and one essay question

Content:
Relevant passages are printed on the question paper. Set texts for this component are listed in Section 3 of the syllabus

Time Alloted:
45 minutes

Format:
25 marks – students must answer one question from a choice of two and are allowed to take their clean copy set texts into the exam room with no annotations or underlining

Time Alloted:
1 hour 15 minutes (75 mins)

Format:
25 marks – students must answer one question from a choice of two

Content:
Both questions require students to write a critical commentary on a poem or prose extracted printed in the question paper and to demonstrate appreciation of the text

Format:
25 marks – portfolio of two assignments (600-1200 words each), each on the study of one complete text.

Content:
The assignments must be on different texts, one of the assignments may be on a text set for Papers 1, 2, and 3 and one of the assignments may be an empathic response to a prose or drama text
